You scared the shit out of me. 你吓得我失禁。 当有人突然从背後拍你一下，或是当你很专心时，突然有人跟你大声讲话，这时候很容易被吓到是吧？如果你被对方吓到了，不妨跟他说，"You scared me." 或是 "You frightened me." 都可以。但是这只适用於小小地被吓到。如果你是被吓到很大很大的一跳，大到需要去收惊的地步时要怎麽说呢？别担心，美国人有一句话很好用，"You scared the shit out of me." If you see a blur after 3 o'clock, that'd be me. 如果你三点之後看到一个模糊的小光点，那就是我了。 Blur 本指墨水滴在纸上扩散开来所造成的污渍，或是指轮廓模糊的一个光影。那把自己说成是一个 blur 又是什麽意思呢？这要先听一个小故事比较容易了解。话说在去年耶诞节前最後一个工作天，大部份的人早已无心工作，幻想着放假之後要去哪里哪里。我去 leasing office拿新的钥匙，顺便问在那里上班的一位美国女孩今天上班到几点，她迫不急待及告诉我，"If you see a blur after 3 o'clock, that'd be me." 意思就是，三点钟一到，她会立刻飞奔夺门而出，速度之快，让她的身形化作一团光影。嗬.... 这里我觉得她用 blur，适切地表达出了一种对假期的渴望，一种迫不急待的喜跃感觉，是不是用的很好呢？ 10. I have no income and I have to pay my tuition. I am the poorest of the poor. 我没有收入来付我的学费，我是穷人里面最穷的。 有时候我们要表达自己很穷，好像除了讲 very poor 之外没有其它任何的选择，不像在中文里我们还有什麽三餐不济、穷愁潦倒之类的成语。但事实上，像是 poorest of the poor 就是一个不错的用法，可以用来强调自己不但很穷，而且还是穷人里面最穷的。比方说，"I would like to donate some money to the poorest of the poor." (我想捐点钱给那些最穷的人。) 跟 poorest of the poor 遥相呼应的则是 richest of the rich，看字面上的意思就知道这是指有钱人里面最有钱的一群。比方说 "There is no question that my boss is the richest of the rich." The cables are normally made continuous through the tops of the towers,down through side towers,there these exist,and then into the anchorage.They bear on specially constructed saddles on the towers,which are shaped to accommodate them ,the saddles being either fixed so that that the cables may slide over them ,or mounted on rollers so that they may move with any movement of the cables.In view of the enormous pull exerted by the heavy cables,their ends must be secured in firm anchorage,and unless they can be embedded in sound natural rock,construction of masonry or concrete must be provided strong enough to withstand the Seya pressures put upon them.The cable strands are normally looped round strand-shoes,which are in turn connected by chains to an anchor-plate embedded in the base of the anchorage. At intervals along the main span,cast-steel cable-brands ate attached to the cables,gripping them firmly and excluding moistures from them,and from these bands suspenders of wire-rope or chains hang down .since these suspenders gave to take the weight of the deck to which they ate attached ,they must have a high tensile strength.One advantage of using the braced-chain suspenders is that they largely dispense with the need for a system of stiffening,being themselves rigid.This stiffening is necessary to resist deformations of the deck of bridge due to moving traffic loads and also to resist lateral pressures from wind.In the case of wire-rope suspenders,the stiffening must be provided by trusses constructed at the level of the deck ,the depth of truss varying with the length of the span. An end to soil problems Almost any cultivation problems faced by any kind of grower could be made easier by a system of soil-less culture developed by Dr.Allen Cooper at the Glasshouse Crops Research Institute at Little-hampton. The logic is simple.Roots need water and they need oxygen:but in most soils these are mutually exclusive,as flooding pushes the air out.Roots also must take up inorganic ions ,but the complexities of soil chemistry are such that these must be supplied in fairly critical proportions,or excess of one may reduce availability of others.In the Glasshouse Crops system the roots are bathed in a constantly circulating film of dilute nutrient;the irreconcilables of air and water,and a wide selection of nutrients are constantly available. The system---called the Nutrient Film Technique,or NFT---merely requires a slope,any-thing from near horizontal to vertical,with channels for dilute nutrient solution to flow down. Surplus collects in a covered drainage channel at the bottom,and is pumped back to the top for topping up and recycling.The plants sit with their roots in the channels. In a simple version,the channels are simply lined with polythene,which is clipped up around the plant stems,so that the only water loss from the system is by transpiration through the leaves.In more sophisticated versions now being developed commercially,the polythene-lined channels becomes custom built gulleys curved in at the top to hold the plants,and adjustable for different crops.In between is infinite scope for inventiveness.In all cases the roots quickly form a continuous mat or rope lining the entire channel.This mat has considerable tensile strenght;the plants are as firmly rooted as in soil. One Queensland lettuce grower has already used the system to solve his labour problems.Australian labourers don't like to stoop;indeed they don't seem to like market gardening at all.He has devised an NFT system with the feeding channels provided by corrugated asbestos,with perforated plastic over the top to poke the roots through and the whole operation---acres of it---is raised to bench level,which his workers much prefer.But he could eliminate labour altogether with a simple machine to insert the seeding lettuces,and a sliding blade to harvest them.Or the lettuces could be harvested,clean roots and all,and wrapped in a polythene bag, so they continued growing till the moment they were eaten.He says he could sell his lettuces three times over,for no one in Queensland has seen their like. California has more light than it knows what to do with but everything is expensive.Glasshouse crops grown only at ground level waste space and light, for there is enough light to grow several tiers.In addition ,40 percent of the area of glasshouses is taken up by access paths.NFT gulleys can be aligned four deep ,and slung on moveable racks so close the rows almost touch on either side.Access is gained simply by swinging the racks apart:along the whole length of the greenhouse,there is need to leave space for only one path,which can be created at will. By contrast ,one of Britain's main market gardening obstacles is low temperature .But plants evidently can tolerate low ambient temperatures if their roots are warm.Instead of heating a whole greenhouse,at great expense,why not simply warm the nutrient solution that bathes their roots?Why not ,indeed ,use the surplus hot water from our power stations to support an NFT system outdoors?The Central Electricity Generating Board could become the UK's chief producer of early vegetables. But it is the third world that could reap most benefit .The nutrient solution will support growth even if highly dilute.The Nile supports lush growth of papyrus :spring water from the south downs in England will support watercress.Only when the water has been leached almost to purity does growth cease.
